When changing hair colours and looking to create the perfect shade of blonde, using a hair toner can be ideal. A toner is a colour product which uses pigment from opposite sides of the colour spectrum to even out the overall shade of someone’s hair. In doing so, it can remove brassiness or orange tones from honey blondes and help ash shades to look more natural and smooth.
If the hair colour is going to be lightened, a toner can be very useful. When bleaching or lightening the natural colour of the hair, all of the darkest coloured pigments are the first to be removed. Sometimes, this can mean that when the overall development time has finished, a brassy yellow to orange effect can be left behind.
This can be difficult to remove. It is particularly common in those with naturally very dark hair or those whose hair has natural redness to it. Whilst some people might think they can simply leave their hair lightening product on the scalp for longer in order to create an even colouration, this is not the case and in fact leaving a product on for too long is likely to lead to the hair becoming over-processed and difficult to work with. Nor can a second application of bleach or other lightening sprays be used immediately afterwards.
Hair toners are products which can be used in these situations to help create the perfect overall colour. Using blue or violet purple pigmentation, they counteract the unwanted yellow or orange tones and help make platinum or warm blondes appear the way they were intended to.
These complementary pigments balance the hair’s shade. A toner can be applied immediately after bleaching processes, as long as the hair has been thoroughly rinsed and towelled dry, meaning that the desired hair effect can be achieved quickly and easily. Toners can also be used on natural blonde hair to enhance its colour and pigmentation. Selecting a toner designed for warm or cool blonde shades will be as effective on naturally blonde hair, adding lustre and evenness to the tone and creating depth.
